The
world is full of me.
“It’s Me, It’s Me.”– Based on a popular
Japanese contemporary novel, director Miki wrote the script himself, opting for
an original, spellbinding ending that makes full use of the art. Realistic,
surreal, funny and unnerving, this film will swallow you up in unfathomable
suspense.
This fantastical tale of “self-multiplication” will be made into a
film by Satoshi Miki ("Adrift in Tokyo"('08), "Instant
Swamp"('09) who has made his mark with his original worldview that renders
his works a world of its own, which is known as “the Miki World.” Kazuya
Kamenashi of a popular boy-band, KAT-TUN, will star as the protagonist,
Hitoshi.
The movie premiered in 15th Udine Far East Film Festival
Italy in April 2013, and Kamenashi won the My Movie Audience Award.
Synopsis:
A
casual scam triggers a surreal series of events, which turns everyone into
“ME,” who eventually turns on each other. Hitoshi, who is at first disoriented
in the world that is inhabited by so many Hitoshis, yet unexpectedly finds the
uncomplicated relationships among “himselves” quite comfortable. I am Hitoshi, aged 28. One day, I encounter another me. That Hitoshi tells me that he has actually met another Hitoshi, the week before. It looks like everyone turns into "ME". Before I know it, the world is filled with "ME" at a staggering speed. NOVEL
The film is adapted from the novel of the same name Ore Ore, written by Tomoyuki Hoshino,
which won the Kenzaburo Oe Prize in 2011. Early in the novel, the narrator
engages in a kind of scam known in Japan as a ore-ore sagi (‘it’s me scam'), in
which he calls up an older person, pretends to be a relative, and tries to get
the person on the other end of the phone line to send money. The narrator finds
himself unwittingly pulled into the life of the person whose identity he has
fraudulently assumed, at the same time that someone else assumes his identity.
This starts a chain-reaction of identity-stealing that extends to the edges of
society, creating an increasingly surreal and dangerous world in which no one
is exactly whom they seem.
