THE WIND RISES soars into cinemas on 20 March.
The Wind Rises is a Studio Ghibli production and will be the final film from legendary filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki. One of the true visual pleasures of Miyazaki films is seeing the protagonist flying the skies and the compelling sense of floating, such as seen in Nausicaäof the Valley of the Wind, Castle in the Sky, Kiki’s Delivery Service, and Porco Rosso. There are no levitation stones or magic spells in The Wind Rises, but as in past works, many scenes in the sky appear in this film.
In The Wind Rises, Jiro (voice of Joseph Gordon-Levitt) dreams of flying and designing beautiful airplanes, inspired by the famous Italian aeronautical designer Caproni (voice of Stanley Tucci). Nearsighted from a young age and unable to be a pilot, Jiro joins a major Japanese engineering company in 1927 and becomes one of the worlds most innovative and accomplished airplane designers.
The film chronicles much of his life, depicting key historical events, including the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, the Great Depression, the tuberculosis epidemic and Japans plunge into war. Jiro meets and falls in love with Nahoko (voice of Emily Blunt), and grows and cherishes his friendship with his colleague Honjo (voice of John Krasinski). Writer and director Hayao Miyazaki pays tribute to engineer Jiro Horikoshi and author Tatsuo Hori in this epic tale of love, perseverance, and the challenges of living and making choices in a turbulent world.
The sky, airplanes, love, cigarettes… The Wind Rises is packed with the favourite things of Hayao Miyazaki.
The character, Jiro, is a combination of two real individuals who lived in the same era –Jiro Horikoshi (aeronautical engineer who designed and created the legendary Zero fighter) and Tatsuo Hori (novelist).
Academy Award winner, Hayao Miyazaki, also gave some traits to Jiro as a projection of himself.
