In The Room by Encore Films

Singapore, 25th January 2016 – Singaporean auteur Eric Khoo’s film IN THE ROOM has been slated for commercial release with a R21 rating in Singapore on 25th February, after much censorship contention on the film’s explicit depictions of sex. The film made its rounds in the international festival circuit to strong audience applause, before hitting home at the 26th Singapore International Film Festival, where the controversy on the censorship edits begun and resulted in the film’s near-exemption from commercial release locally.
Managing Director of Encore Films, Ms Joyce Lee, who will be co-distributing the film in Singapore, says, “IN THE ROOM is a sensual, poignant film that all Singaporeans deserve to watch. In its tastefully executed erotic scenes, the film unabashedly explores the human condition by showing us how a hotel room, in its promise of privacy, unshackles the amorous feelings and illicit desires hidden within different people. The changes in Singapore’s history, people, and politics are also cleverly and subtly expressed through the different relationships taking place in this hotel room over the decades. We’re delighted to be able to work with Golden Village Pictures and Eric to release IN THE ROOM on the big screen in Singapore this February.”

Produced at a budget of US$800,000, IN THE ROOM strings together six narratives spanning several decades that occur in Room 27 of the fictional Hotel Singapura. The film features an international cast such as Hong Kong actress Josie Ho, South Korea’s Choi Woo Shik, Malaysian Lawrence Wong, and Singaporean actor George Young, each in bold explorations of sexual mores in changing times.

Director Eric Khoo says, “I’m very pleased that my new international version that we all love will be screened here intact before it travels to other countries this year.”

Veteran Hong Kong producer, Ms Shi Nansun, adds, "I am delighted that Singaporeans will get to see this film and share in the collective memory of Singapore’s past.”

The film guides us through decades of love, life, and lust, experienced by various individuals in a hotel room of the Singapura Hotel, a ritzy establishment that gradually crumbles to disreputable ruins. Sex is the common thread for those in Room 27, but at the heart of these short-lived moments of intimacy lies a keen sense of suffering, regret, and loss. The film will first release in Singapore, followed by Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other countries.

CEO of Golden Village Pictures Pte. Ltd, Ms. Clara Cheo, adds, “Golden Village has always been supportive of local content and it is our pleasure to work with Encore Films and Eric to bring this bold and meaningful local film to Singapore audience.” IN THE ROOM is co-distributed by Encore Films and Golden Village Pictures in Singapore.
