SHIN GODZILLA 真哥斯拉 by Encore Films

Introduction:
It has been 60 years since the release of the first GODZILLA movie in 1954, and to date there has been 28 franchised works released in Japan to date—not forgetting the 2014 Hollywood version. Over 100 million audiences have seen the fearsome ‘King of Monsters’ on the big screen, making Godzilla one of the most successful and recognisable movie monster of our time. After a gap of 12 years from the last Japanese adaptation, Godzilla is revived in SHIN GODZILLA by director-scriptwriter Hideaki Anno 庵野秀明 of the famed NEON GENESIS EVANGELION franchise. Shinji Higuchi 樋口真嗣, who directed the live action ATTACK ON TITAN films, joins Anno as co-director and special effects director. SHIN GODZILLA was released in Japan on 29 July 2016 to tremendous box office success, grossing over ¥625 million (S$8.2 million) during its opening weekend. The film has also been hailed as a “masterpiece” by Japanese critics. While the original Godzilla served as a metaphor for Japan’s post-war nuclear devastation, the newest installation recalls the triple disaster strikes that hit the country in 2011 including the tragic Fukushima nuclear meltdown.
The film is set in contemporary Japan where Godzilla surfaces for the first time, leaving mass destruction in his wake, and follows the Japanese government’s code-red emergency response. Says director Anno, “The fantasy world that Godzilla exists in is not only a dream or wish, but it is a caricature of reality, sarcasm and reflection of the world.” This Godzilla is the biggest in the series’ history, standing at 118.5 metres tall. Higuchi adopted a ‘hybrid’ approach to animate the monster by incorporating computer-generated imagery, motion-capture technology, traditional practical effects, as well as the classic ‘suitmation’ where an actor in a monster suit moves through a miniaturised city. This time, three actors were employed in the ‘suitmation’ process, which was then enhanced digitally to bring Godzilla’s movements to life.

A massive and breath-taking production, the team consisted of over 1000 production crew members and 329 actors including Hiroki Hasegawa 長谷川博己 and Satomi Ishihara 石原里美 of ATTACK ON TITAN fame as well as Yutaka Takenouchi 竹野内豊.

SYNOPSIS:
An unknown source causes a catastrophic accident in the tunnels of the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line, leading to irreparable damage and massive flooding. An emergency cabinet meeting is ordered to salvage the situation and discover the cause of the accident. Soon after, a gigantic creature emerges and rampages through town after town, much to everyone’s horror. How will Japan deal with this gigantic “monster” that they know nothing about?
